Angelina Jolie doing well ahead of birth: doctor

by ann007 @ 2008-07-03 - 06:51:23

NICE, France (Reuters) - Pregnant Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is doing well in a French Riviera hospital and is expected to give birth to twins in "the coming weeks", her doctor said on Wednesday.

Doctor Michel Sussmann gave few details away during a brief news conference, declining to reveal the sex of the expected babies or give a clear indication of the likely birth date.

"What she needs now is simple surveillance by monitoring to ensure the good health of her babies in the weeks to come," Sussmann told reporters at the Lenval hospital in the southern French city of Nice.

Jolie, 33, arrived at the hospital on Sunday by helicopter and has a suite of rooms reserved for her and her partner Brad Pitt, which have been sealed off by bodyguards.

"Mrs. Angelina Jolie and ... Mr. Brad Pitt, told me to let you know that she is doing just fine at the moment," Sussmann said.

"Get Smart" not nearly smart enough

by ann007 @ 2008-06-18 - 08:31:46

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Get Smart" the movie has precious little to do with "Get Smart" the iconic TV series from the 1960s -- but then again, the movie has precious little to do with screen comedy, either.

This is a slapdash effort whose producers threw money and stunts onscreen instead of the satirical gags and one-liners that made the old spy spoof so memorable.

It's hard to see how this lame puppy will gain any boxoffice traction other than by waving the banner of star Steve Carell opening weekend. His younger fans, who wouldn't know "Get Smart" from "I Spy," might laugh at the overblown action swirling around their poker-faced hero, but are more likely to advise friends to wait for the DVD.

The film opens in Washington, D.C., where satirical remnants of the old TV series are visible -- like Carell's agent Maxwell Smart taking a musical march down a corridor of opening and closing sliding doors only to disappear down a telephone booth into the super-secret headquarters of his spy agency, CONTROL. The film then expands into a more James Bond second act set in and around Moscow and winds up in a stunt-laden finale in downtown Los Angeles.

The overriding factor here is that the filmmakers -- this would include ham-fisted director Peter Segal and the punchless writing team of Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember -- don't know what the joke is. Is this a spoof of an old TV series? Is this a spoof of Ian Fleming? Is this a Carell vehicle? No one seems to know, as familiar lines crop up in the wrong places and the timing of gags, so indelibly rendered in the series, misfires on nearly every occasion.

To his credit, Carell doesn't attempt to imitate the late Don Adams, the original Maxwell Smart. Carell's own brand of flustered dignity and disguised insecurity plays well enough. Carell's Max is less an inept spy who bumbles his way to success than an analyst-wonk out of his depth in the field.

Max's boss, CONTROL's Chief, is played by Alan Arkin, who manages to retain his dignity, while Max's co-agent and love interest, Agent 99, is Anne Hathaway, who manages to retain her beauty. She's a martial-arts babe rather than an adoring co-worker, as Barbara Feldon originally played the role, but that probably suits the times.

Witness friend 'in R Kelly video'

by ann007 @ 2008-05-22 - 08:48:11

Simha Jamison, 24, told the Chicago court that she recognised her friend Roshona Landfair, 23, from her face.

She said the two of them often met Mr Kelly when they were around age 12.

Mr Kelly denies filming himself having sex with an underage girl and his lawyer said neither his client nor the alleged victim are on the video.

Mr Kelly is charged with 14 counts relating to child pornography in connection with the 26-minute video featuring explicit acts of sex between an adult man and a girl believed to be aged about 13.

'Cash gifts'

In the second full day of the trial, Ms Jamison said Ms Landfair had first introduced Mr Kelly as her godfather and that they often visited him at his recording studio and a Chicago basketball court.

She said Mr Kelly would give Ms Landfair money - "no less than $100 (£50) and no more than $500".

Ms Landfair often stayed on with the singer after Ms Jamison went home, she said.

Ms Landfair has said it is not her in the video and has refused to testify for the prosecution.

Another witness, a former investigator with the Illinois attorney's office, said the room used in the video resembles a hot tub room in a Chicago home once owned by Mr Kelly.

During the cross-examination, the defence suggested that the video may have been digitally altered.

The video is believed to have been made between 1998 and 2000.

The 41-year-old star, whose hits include She's Got That Vibe and I Believe I Can Fly, faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.

The tape was originally posted to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper in 2002. The paper then handed it to police.

'Life on Mars' lands on ABC fall lineup

by ann007 @ 2008-05-14 - 10:03:20

ABC is banking on consistency to boost its ratings next season.

At the start of the 2008-2009 season, ABC will add just two new series to the schedule, the drama "Life on Mars," based on the BBC series of the same name, and "Opportunity Knocks," a reality game show from Ashton Kutcher's production company.

As expected, ABC has picked up "Scrubs" for the midseason. Until last week, the critically acclaimed, though ratings challenged, comedy aired on NBC.

"Very simply," ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson said yesterday, "it's an incredibly stable schedule. It's a schedule that dominated in the fall."

Gone from ABC's lineup is the failed "Sex and the City" wanna-be "Cashmere Mafia," the cult-favorite drama "October Road" and "Men in Trees." (Lucy Liu, of "Cashmere Mafia," will move over to the returning series "Dirty Sexy Money.")

Also hitting the exit ramp is Oprah Winfrey's reality series "Oprah's Big Give."

"We loved that show," McPherson said. "We absolutely would have done another installment."

McPherson said Winfrey decided not to continue with the project.

David E. Kelley's "Boston Legal" will be back in the fall for its final season, McPherson said. Kelley will return to write most of the 13 episodes.

Among the shows returning for the new season will be "Samantha Who?," "Dancing With the Stars," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Desperate Housewives," "Eli Stone," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Pushing Daisies."

ABC's development plan, like those of the other networks, was upended by the writers' strike. As a result, some shows that were in development were not made into pilots in time for ABC to make a decision. "We have 17 pilots still in development for midseason," McPherson said, "which is good from a timing standpoint."

Of the new shows, the Kutcher-produced "Opportunity Knocks" is in the vein of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," where a truck pulls up to a home and someone knocks on the door and sets up the contest on the person's front lawn.

"Life on Mars" has a modern police detective who, after a car crash, finds himself in 1973, still working as a detective.

"Life on Mars" is the latest in a growing trend where networks attempt to convert British series into American hits. NBC did it with "The Office." "American Idol's" roots are in a British hit. And CBS has picked up "Eleventh Hour," which is a Jerry Bruckheimer adaptation of a British thriller.

As for "Scrubs," McPherson said the show will give the network a quality comedy. He noted that NBC aired the series in 17 different time periods and gave it little promotion.

Joining "Scrubs" in the lineup for midseason is the Ashton Kutcher/Tyra Banks project "Opportunity Knocks," described as a "beauty pageant unlike any you've ever seen," and "The Goode Family," an animated series from Mike Judge ("King of the Hill") about a family obsessed with doing the right thing, politically, socially and environmentally.

Dont buy a branded bag just because everyone has it

by ann007 @ 2008-02-27 - 09:19:51

Do you fall prey to this? Do you find yourself wanting a bag just because everyone you know has it or because everyone wants it?
A classic example is the by now infamous I’m Not a Plastic Bag bag by Anya Hindmarch. I fell prey to this madness and even tried to get it in KLCC when it was launched. Fortunately, sanity reigned and I opted not to queue up for it.
So, my little bit of advice for everyone thinking of buying a branded bag is to get one that is classic and that will never go out of style. Don’t buy a brand or model just because its famous or because some star was seen carrying it. Remember, celebrities and socialites can afford to change their bags every so often once they tire of it. Its a lot harder for the rest of us to do so. Above all, don’t encourage the madness that Louis Vuitton has tried to foist off on us by creating this monstrosity from scraps of cloth.
A classic design in a branded bag will last you through the years. A trendy design will merely date you in the future and if its no longer in vogue, it will simply be money wasted.
Also, you don’t have to own a branded bag to be cool. A cheaper option in a lesser known brand might look just as good, provided its well made. I have lots of bags, both branded and of smaller brands, and I sometimes find myself carrying the lesser brands’ bags more simply because the designs might be more practical or simply because I want to attract too much unwanted attention. But this will be the subject of a discussion another day perhaps?
